Your Essential Guide
When it comes to handling hazardous chemicals, complying with safety regulations should be your top priority. It might seem like all the rules and regulations around using bunded storage are overcautious, but they are there for good reason! Effective bunded chemical storage can help to prevent environmental contamination and will protect everyone on site.
So, let’s look at the rules you need to be following and how we can help you comply at every stage!
What is Bunded Drum Storage?
A bunded storage system is one that is designed to catch any leaks and spills from storage containers. The bund encases the main container and acts as a barrier to stop hazardous substances from escaping. It is by far the most effective way of preventing any safety incidents relating to hazardous substances on site. Even a minor leak can cause serious harm, and that is why there is detailed guidance in place to help you get your bunded storage setup right.
Containment
When it comes to bunded storage, one of the most important things that you need to think about is capacity. You should always ensure that the following guidelines are being met:
- The bund must be able to hold at least 110% of the volume of the largest container stored within it.
- If multiple containers are stored in the same bund, it must hold 25% of the total combined volume, or 110% of the largest container – whichever is greater.
Why these specific amounts? Well, in the event of a leak, there will be ample space to contain any spillage without any overflow.
The Construction of the Storage
Bunded storage needs to be constructed from materials that are:
- Impermeable so leaks can be prevented.
- Chemically resistant to the specific substances being stored.
- Durable enough to stand up to long-term use.
You should always check that the materials your bunded storage is made from are compatible with what it will be holding. Not sure? Don’t worry, we will be able to help!
Safe Design
Bunds should have no drains, taps, or outlets, which ensures that leaks cannot escape the containment system. You should also ensure that all valves, pipes, and hoses associated with the containers remain within the bunded area. You should also ensure that nothing can escape through the bund. You may want to test this with something like water first, so you won’t be caught by surprise once any hazardous materials are in place.
