How to Choose the Best Platform Trolley

Whether you’re working your day job or even moving house, you might find that you need to transport weighty items from A to B, but are unable to do so on your own. A robust platform trolley or truck is the best solution, and it’s important to choose the right one for the job.

1. Consider the Size

The physical dimensions of your new platform trolley will need to not only fit its intended transportation purpose, but also be able to manoeuvre around the given space freely. This could mean that if your trolley will predominantly be used indoors, a smaller size may be required. Outdoor use is obviously much more flexible in terms of platform size.

Aside from the dimensions of the platform itself, you should also consider the height of the trolley itself, including how tall the handlebars rise. When it comes to the best height, this will depend on how cumbersome your loads will be, as you will still need to lift them onto the trolley before they can be transported. For example, if you choose a platform trolley which is much closer to the ground, this will shorten the distance and reduce the strength needed to load it.

2. Consider the Load Capacity

Equally important is how much your platform trolley can carry. Evaluate the goods you plan to carry regularly, and the maximum weight you will need your trolley to bear, and from there you should be able to easily select the right model for you.

We understand how important generous load capacities are when it comes to platform trolleys, so we have curated a range that is robust and fully capable of a number of applications. Some platform trolleys available can only carry between 50 and 150 kilograms, but our smallest models can take up to 300 kilograms. Our most heavy-duty models will make carrying up to 700 kilograms with ease.

3. Check the Wheels

Without sturdy, well-fitted wheels, your platform trolley may falter before it has left the starting line. The best platform trolleys on the market are often made with a combination of two types of wheels, two swivel wheels for unhindered manoeuvrability and two stationary wheels for added stability and steering control.

For heavier loads, opt for larger wheels, as they will handle pressure without buckling and glide across uneven surfaces smoothly. But bear in mind that the larger the wheel, the higher from the ground your platform will be suspended, so try to balance size with load capacity in order to maintain property safety while in operation and left stationary.

All of our platform trolleys and trucks come with a choice of fixed and breakable wheels, with castors made from high-strength stainless steel and tires from the most resilient of rubbers.

4. Look at the Build Materials

High-quality platform trolleys are set apart by the materials used to build them. All other factors, including load capacity, will hinge on the right materials being used in the right ways. This will also determine how fit your new platform trolley will be in outdoor conditions.

Aluminium and stainless steel are among the two most popular choices for platform trolley composition. This is because of their unmatched strength and durability, whilst remaining lightweight, unlike other metallic choices. Despite their strength, metal frames will be more prone to rust and decay when exposed to water, so it is recommended that you treat the exterior of the trolley if you plan to use it outside or in adverse weather conditions.

We choose stainless steel for the majority of our platform trolleys. Though still prone to rust if not looked after, stainless steel is by far the least susceptible metal, and the easiest to maintain long-term. We also fit some of our trolleys with sturdy wire mesh to keep your goods in place as well as a slip-resistant platform surface.

Our Pick of the Best Platform Trolleys Available

We offer a wide range of platform trolleys, each with its own mode of use and physical capabilities. They are incredibly versatile and come in single- or double-ended variations, as well as three or four-sided enclosures.

We have eight core ranges of platform trolleys and trucks, each suited to a different application and industry setting.

  • 500 Platform Trolleys: This design is sold in three models; deck-only (with no handles), single-ended, and double-ended. You can also adjust which wheels you would prefer. These platform trolleys can carry up to 500 kilograms.
  • Small Deck Platform Trolleys: Perfect for use in warehouses, factories, and workshops predominantly. The small decked trolleys come in four models, with a single and double-ended variation, and a 500-kilogram maximum load capacity.
  • Mesh Panel Platform Trolleys: This high-quality and robust range comes with a stable plywood deck as well as mesh panelling to allow for absolute security when operating. With 500 kilograms of bearable weight, they can be used in most scenarios.
  • Timber Panel Platform Trolleys: A unique range with timber panels instead of mesh. These trolleys are ideal for loads which could potentially slip through the grating of our meshed ranges, whilst also bearing the same 500-kilogram load capacity.
  • Colour Range Platform Trolleys: The four bright, primary colours that this steel decked set comes in allow for simple organisation between trolleys or within stock rooms. This range also has a generous carry capacity of 700 kilograms, making them one of our strongest platform trolleys.
  • Stainless Steel Platform Trolleys: The mesh panelling of our stainless steel platform trolleys is completely detachable, allowing for maximum versatility in use. They come with the same options for single or double ends, as well as three or four sides and a load capacity of 500 kilograms.
  • Folding Platform Trolleys: Perfect for areas with spatial restraints, as they can be easily collapsed, folded, and stored away flat. The range comes with steel, aluminium, and plastic variations with up to 300 kilograms in load capacity.
  • Zinc Plated Platform Trolleys: Zinc plating is an ideal material choice for warehouse, workshop, and factory use, as it is incredibly robust and forgiving. The models available come with mesh sides and an impressive 700-kilogram load capacity.
